For Sarah

The sand was cool between my toes. Newly cut grass and the blossoming flowers filled my nose and mouth with every breath. The sun was headed west, sending its stifling hot ray raining over the park. Giggles filled my ears from the children playing games nearby in the sandbox. I focused my eyes on a knot in the wood so I wouldn't have to look up. "Christan, whats your favorite color?" Sarah asked. I could feel her staring at me but I didn't look up from the knothole embedded in the old wooden plank. "The same color as when you blush" I smiled tilting my head even farther away from her gaze. She touched my arm and side a pair of sunglasses between my fingers. "Just look at me once" I gripped the glasses and nodded slowly because we both knew why I wasn't looking at her. I opened the frames and gingerly slid them over my ears. She put her finger under my chin and hooked my face and slowly pulled my face in her direction. I let her finger guide my head until I was facing her. "Hi, I'm Sarah. Nice to meet you" She said in a playful tone and smiled sweetly. I laughed and averted my gaze bashfully. I focused back on her taking her hand that was still under my chin in my own and stood up pulling her with me. "Come with me I want to see something" I laughed leading her twenty feet to the parking lot. We stopped on the side of the closest car. Still holding her hand I looked into our reflection. The glasses she had given me fit perfect. I ran my free hand through my hair and shook it. Making my hair look . I starting singing I wish, by the secret handshake lightly. I turned to Sarah who was just staring at me in amazement. I put on my best Will Farrell face and quoted anchorman "I look good, I mean I look really good." I smiled "Hey everyone come see how good I look." I shouted, making a few people turn their heads at us. "Shush!" Sarah said putting her finger to my lips. "Can I have my glasses back now" she asked when I had quieted down about it. I leaned my upper body in and pressed my forehead to hers. "just let me wear them for a while please." I whispered, my voice soft and pleading. "But I don't care if..." she started to protest, but I interrupted her. "I know you don't, but I do." She pulled her head away from mine. "fine, but promise me by the end of the night, ill get to see my romeo." I smiled and took her hand in mine again. "Then let us leave this place my Juliet and never return, or else we might end up like our fictional counterparts." I said smiling "Back thy fowl beasts!" I yelled pointing at people now watching us. "Let us make our escape my dearest" I said starting to jog, making my way across the parking lot. Pulling Sarah along nearby. Once we reached the sidewalk we slowed down to a casual walking pace. "I don't know why you even want to talk to me." I mused "And kinda crazy" I added with a smile. "Yeah you are, but your my kind of crazy." she said giggling and bumping into me. Hours went by and we held each others hands and wondered the vast city. Resting on park benches laughing the people walking by for not being as happy as we were at that moment. As the sun got further away, the more clouds piled overhead. Then sun dipped beneath the skyline. Leaving our shadows to hide waiting for the light. So they can sneak out and see us again. Thunder blasted in our ears. "Uh oh." Sarah said looking up at me. Right as she finished talking a drop of rain fell into the crevasse in between the crack in our joined hands and landing on our intertwined fingers. Splashing smaller droplets across our palms and fingers. We let go of each other and stared at our own hand then each other in astonishment. "I have an idea." I said grabbing her still upturned hand and pulled her into the median of the road when no cars were coming. Cars started to drive past us, slowing down when we got near. I let go of her hand and stood a few feet away and started play dancing a simple hardcore two step. As I was dancing the clouds opened up. Sending countless drops of soft rain upon us. I was soaked as was Sarah water dripping from our hair. I stopped dancing and shook my head lightly sending droplets into the rest of the uniform rain. Sarah stared at me like she would a deranged person. "You're completely crazy." She said laughing at my antics. She turned and started to walk away. "Wait" I said loudly so I could be heard over the din of rain and cars. As she turned around I stuck out my arm, Holding my hand out. "Will you dance with me. She regarded me for a moment and put her hand gently in mine. I tightened my grip and pulled her close to me wrapping my arms around her waist. She draped her arms over my shoulders and we held each other close. Swaying back and forth using the rain as our music. The street light sparked to life over our heads sending a ring of light around us. Sarah put her head against my chest. I could feel her warm cheek against my heart. I unwrapped one of my hands and placed it under her chin and turned her face towards mine. I leaned closer to her face, but she pulled back a little bit. "Wait" She said weakly. Taking one of her hands and placing them on the bottom rim of the glasses. "Do you trust me." She said with a little more confidence. I stood without breathing. "May I" she said moving the glasses a little and making a soft and beautiful puppy dog pout face. I took a breath and nodded lightly. She took both hands and wrapped them around the frame. Pulling them slowly off my face. Once she got them completely off she folded them in her hand and looked at me in the eyes. She smiled and put her hands softly around the sides of my neck, pulled me closer and kissed me. When we broke apart we started at each other rain soaked and happy.
